Golf Shoes
Getting the perfect pair of golf shoes can be a big step toward your commitment to the game. But finding the right golf shoes can be a bit different from finding your favorite pair of sneakers. This guide will help you find what to look out for when you’re ready to shop.
Spiked or Spikeless?
Spiked or spikeless? That is the question.
If you’re looking for extra stability through your swing, spiked golf shoes provide a more stable base and grounded grip, especially during those wetter weathers.
Spikeless golf shoes have the more sporty leisure look that provides more comfort and modern, trendy style. Golfers prefer spikeless shoes on firmer surfaces like the practice range, though as footwear technology evolves spikeless golf shoes are offering more and more traction.
Sizing Up The Details
It never hurts to get a refresher on your shoe size. To get an accurate measurement of your feet, you’ll first want to measure each foot. We know not everyone is going to have a Brannock Device (the foot-measuring instrument you’ll remember from the shoe store) readily available, so here are some easy steps you can do at home.
Step 1
- Place a measuring tape the floor, pulled out long enough so it’s longer than your foot. Place your foot on top of the tape with your longest toe (typically the big or second toe) at the 1 inch mark.
Step 2
- Measure the distance from your longest toe all the way to your heel.
Step 3
- Measure the distance from your longest toe all the way to your heel and note the number.
Width is also an important measurement. One of the most common issues that golfers run into is a shoe that’s too tight or too loose. Here’s how to measure the width of your foot.
Step 1
- Place the measuring tape horizontally on the ground and place the widest part of your foot over the measuring tape.
Step 2
- Now measure the distance from one side of your foot to the other and mark down the number.
Repeat the steps with your other foot. For golfers who wear inserts or orthotics, we suggest measuring your shoe size with the inserts or orthotics on. Want to shop in-person? Visit your local PGA TOUR Superstore and one our Associates are ready with a Brannock Device to make sure the shoe fits.
Waterproof and Breathability
Waterproof Features
If you often find yourself on the course in wet conditions, waterproof shoes are essential. One of the most effective materials for waterproofing is Gore-Tex, known for its thick, durable, and water-resistant properties. Golf shoes made with Gore-Tex can keep your feet dry during early morning rounds or unexpected rain showers. Other waterproofing options include synthetic materials treated with water-repellent coatings. These materials provide a barrier against moisture while maintaining a lightweight feel.
Breathability
On the flip side, if you play in hot climates, breathability is key to keeping your feet comfortable. Shoes with mesh panels or perforated designs allow for better air circulation, helping to prevent your feet from overheating and sweating excessively.
Moisture-wicking linings are another feature to look for, as they draw sweat away from your feet, keeping them dry and reducing the risk of blisters. The right balance of waterproofing and breathability ensures that your golf shoes can handle a variety of weather conditions, providing comfort and performance no matter where you play.
Arch Support
Another aspect people overlook is the shape of their arch. You’ll be on your feet a lot over the duration of the round, whether you walk or ride in a cart. Not having the proper arch support is a big culprit in uncomfortable golf shoes. The simplest way to discover what type of arch shape you need is to wet your foot and place it on a piece of paper or brown bag. You’ll quickly know if you have a low, normal, or high arch.
Low arch
- For golfers with a low arch or flat feet, there will be more surface area revealed in the wet foot test.
- A shoe with a v-shaped throat could be a great option for you, because they tend to feel snug around the toes and on top of the foot.
Normal arch
- If you have normal arches, your footprint will show a clear curve toward the outside of the foot, but with plenty in the middle.
- You’ll have the widest selection of golf shoes available.
High arch
- If the distance between the outside of your foot and the inside is small in your footprint, you might have high arches.
- For golfers with a higher arch, a wider, U-throat shoe may be a nice option because it has more room (and support) in the step-in area.

To get the best value for your money, look for shoes that offer a good balance of quality, durability, and features. Consider what aspects are most important to you, such as waterproofing, breathability, support, or style, and prioritize those in your search.
