5 Most Common Driver Fitting Questions and Answers with Gabby Golf Girl

Choosing the right driver can feel overwhelming. With so many models, lofts, shafts, and swing variables, where do you even start? In this PGA TOUR Superstore Golf Clinic, Gabby Golf Girl sits down with Summer Fenstermaker, one of our fitting experts, to tackle the five most commonly asked questions about driver fittings and how you can use that knowledge to improve your performance on the course.

1. How Do I Know Which Driver Model and Head Shape Are Right for Me?

The best driver looks good to your eye and performs well for your swing. Driver heads come in different styles - from low spin to max forgiveness - and each one affects ball flight and consistency.

Gabby Golf Girl recommends to “Start with your current gamer and what you dislike and like about it.” From there, explore models with features like:

  • Low spin heads for experienced players with high clubhead speeds
  • Max forgiveness heads for players needing help with off-center hits
  • Mid-size models for a balance between control and forgiveness

Booking a STUDIO fitting session is the best way to test different head shapes. The driver that’ll feel best in your hands is very swing dependent and often varies by how consistent your impact is across the face of the club.

2. What Driver Shaft Should I Use?

Shaft fitting is about more than just flex. It also involves weight, length, and how it feels during your swing. A lighter shaft can help you gain speed, while a heavier one may offer more control.

Shaft customization options include:

  • Flex: Ranges from ladies and senior to stiff and extra stiff
  • Length: Standard or shortened/lengthened based on your height, posture and swing arc
  • Weight: Lightweight shafts can help increase swing speed, while heavier ones offer stability, especially for players with higher swing speeds

“It’s very player swing dependent,” Summer explains. “I would urge people to come in and test different shafts. It’s important to come in, try these, and see what actually works.”

3. Can a Driver Fix My Slice or Hook?

Yes - and that’s one of the best reasons to get professionally fitted. Many modern drivers have adjustable hosels and weights that can help correct common shot shapes like slices (left to right) or hooks (right to left).

“If you don’t have the time to go in and take lessons or work on your game, tweaking your driver’s settings can be a great way to fix your shot,” Summer says.

Gabby was able to improve her shot by simply making a few adjustments to her driver, rather than completely changing her playstyle.

  • Gabby’s driver was set to a lower loft, which opens the face at address and can promote a left to right shot, or a fade/slice.
  • By adjusting the hosel to a more closed position, the clubface helped her straighten out her shot.

Adjustability Features to Look For In A Driver:

  • Loft sleeves to open or close face angle and loft by several degrees
  • Movable weights that help adjust shot shape
  • Standard vs. draw-biased heads for reducing left-to-right misses

4. How Do I Hit the Ball Farther With My Driver?

Increasing distance with your driver comes down to two key factors:

  • Clubhead speed: How fast you swing
  • Ball speed: How well you strike the center of the face of the club

“Ball speed is not going to go up unless we hit the center of the face,” Summer reminds us. There are also some easy drills you can do at home to get more comfortable with your driver.

Alternate Clubs If You’re Feeling Out of Sync

Alternating swings between your driver and lob wedge can help improve tempo and timing while preventing overswinging.

Start by Focusing On Just Your Swing Speed

While it may sound counterintuitive at first, focusing only on how fast you’re swinging can help dial in your swing speed. Once you're happy with the speed, then you can layer in added focus on accuracy.

5. What’s the #1 Driver Tip You Give Most Often?

Our most frequent advice? Get your swing path and tempo right without overthinking it. You can practice this using one of our favorite drills inspired by LPGA athlete, Nelly Korda:

  • Start by placing a second golf ball behind your club.
  • As you move your club to begin your swing, practice rolling the second ball backwards.
  • Take note of how the ball rolls and focus on rolling it backwards in a straight line.
  • If you want to really hone in your swing path, designate a set spot you want to roll the second golf ball to and try to land it there multiple times.

This promotes a straight takeaway, smooth tempo, and keeps you centered throughout your motion. If the ball rolls straight, your swing path is likely in a great position. If it skews left or right, that’s a cue to work on your swing.

Bonus Tip: Tee Height Matters

When teeing up a shot, half the ball should sit above the top of the clubface and the other half should sit below to promote optimal launch and make it easier to hit onto the fairway.
